Introducing Composting to Tarakan High School Students

On Saturday February 23th, Tarakan Cleaning Agency introduced composting methods to the Green Team of SMA 1 Tarakan (Senior high school). The Green Team is the Environmental Club of SMA 1. In this event, Sonya Wijayanti as discussant demonstrated the Takakura Method to the students.

Tabungan Lingkungan and Tarakan Award Ceremonies

On Thursday 21st February, coinciding with the National Waste Day, DKPP (Cleaning Agency) organized the Tabungan Lingkungan Reward Ceremony together with the Tarakan Lestari Award by the Environmental Management Agency (BPLH).  The event opened with a report on Tabungan Lingkungan  by Abd.

Regional Seminar on Community-Based Solid Waste Management in Cebu, Philippines 3 - 4 Dec 2012

On the 3rd and 4th December 2012, Regional Seminar on Community-Based Solid Waste Management was held in Cebu City Hall, organised by the Cebu City Government, Japan Fund for the Global Environment, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Kitakyushu International Techno-Cooperative Association (KITA). 

Takakura Composting Demonstration in Mataram, 24 November 2012

On 24 November 2012, a Takakura Composting demonstration event took place at Hari Kesatuan Gerak PKK.  It was well attended by Mataram dignitaries with the Chief of National Family Welfare Agency Mr. Haryono Suyono, the Vice Governor of West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB Province) Mr. Badrul Munir, the Chief of PKK NTB Province Mrs. Rabiatul A. Majdi (the Governor's wife), Vice Chief of  PKK NTB Province Mrs. Elok Badrul Munir (the Vice Governor's wife), Mayor of Mataram Mr. Ahyar Abduh and the Chief of  PKK Mataram City Mrs.

Spreading Takakura Composting Across the Wider Community in Mataram

Mataram is highly engaged in ensuring that composting is not just focused on the urban villages.  There are two other programmes – a rural composting programme and also the Green Schools Project. 

NTB Province Fostered Village (Kampung Binaan) Programme Socialisation Meeting, 19th September 2012

As part of the Foster Village programme preparations and public consultations are being held regarding the implementation of the programme.  This initial outreach activity took place on 19th September at the West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB) Provincial Forestry Department.  The meeting was attended by 30 participants including local government officials, NGOs, academics and community representatives.

The solid waste management system in the capital region of NTB (including the city of Mataram) is not yet able to cover the entire region and cope with the amount of the waste generated.  Contributing factors include a lack of facilities, a lack of infrastructure and low public awareness on domestic waste reduction.  This last point is particularly key as waste generation is still dominated by household and market waste.

Kampar Natural Organic Compost Fertiliser Packs Launch, 13th October 2012

Kampar City Hall formally launched its Natural Organic Compost Fertiliser Packs in association with a twin programme, the Kilo of Kindness campaign which is a campaign to assist the poor thorough food donations.  The event was held on 13th October 2012 at Kampar City Hall with around 400 participants comprising government servants, private sector workers, NGO workers and communities.  Both programmes are local Agenda 21 programmes launched by the Assistant Director of Perak State Economic Planning Unit Mr. Hj. Meor Ismail b. Meor Akim.

Kampar’s Participation at the Malaysian National Local Council Environmental Health Conference, 24th - 25th September 2012

Mr. Nor Akmal b. Yang Ghazali from Kampar was recently invited to speak at the National Local Council Environmental Health Conference 2012 which was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 24th – 25th September 2012 with around 250 participants from 156 local authorities from all over Malaysia.  This is an annual conference which was inaugurated in 2008.

Cebu City Hits 30% Waste Reduction, Aims for 35% by End of 2013

During the first week of October 2012, IGES went to visit Cebu City as part of a Community-based Solid Waste Management and Composting Project project being co-organised with KITA.  Researchers were able to meet with a variety of stakeholders in Cebu City and see progress being made towards Cebu City’s goal of reducing waste by 35% by 2013.
