Spreading Takakura Composting Across the Wider Community in Mataram

Mataram is highly engaged in ensuring that composting is not just focused on the urban villages.  There are two other programmes – a rural composting programme and also the Green Schools Project.

The rural composting programme is an occasional programme introducing and encouraging composting in rural communities in order to reduce the use of chemical fertiliser.  It started in April 2012 and has so far held 5 training sessions.  There have been two recent training sessions – the first in Perumahan Bumi Selaparang Asri 2 on the 30 September 2012 with 30 participants and the second in Desa Ranjok, Kecamatan Gunungsari, Lombok Barat on 5th October 2012 with 35 participants.  The training was organized by BLHP (Badan Lingkungan Hidup dan Penelitian) of NTB Province and BLH of Lombok Barat Region and led by Airi Kaneko, JICA Junior Expert and Baiq Sri Wahyu H. (BLHP of NTB Province).

Green Schools Project

The Green Schools Project started in 2009 (but implemented intensively for composting since November 2011)  was developed under BLHP (Badan Lingkungan Hidup dan Penelitian) of West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB Province) and the JICA Junior expert, Ms. Airi Kaneko and aims to involve at least 14 schools.  The goal of the programme is to raise awareness concerning environmental problems and foster a green attitude among the young of Mataram.  One recent activity which took place on 11 October 2012 and led by Ms. Airi Kaneko was to encourage keeping the school area clean through Takakura Method Composting.
